MTS test system & Beckhoff: Success story at Baumann

26. Jun 2025

The Beckhoff magazine PC Control reports on the MTS from Baumann: a modular, future-proof test system with innovative Beckhoff automation technology.

For more than 40 years, Baumann Automation in Amberg has been developing turnkey automation solutions for sectors such as the automotive supply industry, electronics, pharmaceuticals and medical technology. Our many years of experience continuously flow into new solutions - such as our MTS (Modular Test System), which fulfils the increasing requirements of modern testing technology.

We have been relying on PC- and EtherCAT-based control technology from Beckhoff since 2005 - and are now also using it consistently in the MTS. The performance, modularity and interface diversity of the system were decisive factors in this decision right from the start. Our partnership with Beckhoff has proven to be valuable both technologically and strategically.

‘In addition to performance, the system's variety of interfaces and openness were crucial for us - both for integrating a wide range of measuring devices and for communicating with higher-level systems and the Internet.’

Together for innovation: focus on collaboration with Beckhoff

The close and successful cooperation between Baumann Automation and Beckhoff Automation was emphasised in a recent customer article in the Beckhoff magazine PC Control 02/2025. The article focuses on the technical highlights and the modular design of the MTS system, which could be realised through the use of Beckhoff technology.

As part of this project, Mr Uwe Kraus, head of the Beckhoff sales office in Nuremberg, visited our team in Amberg. Together with our experts - including Jörg Seybold, Heiko Hochmuth and Martin Lehmeier - the cooperation was intensified and future developments were discussed. The personal exchange emphasises the strong, practical support from Beckhoff as well as the common goal of continuously developing modern automation technologies.

technological advantages of beckhoff in the mts system

Our decision in favour of Beckhoff is based on concrete technical added value:

  • Compact design thanks to the ultra-compact C6032 Industrial PC, ideal for tight spaces
  • Flexible I/O level with EJ series EtherCAT plug-in modules - no complex wiring, fewer sources of error, less installation work
  • High-precision measurement technology with ELM terminals for voltage and current measurement up to ±1. 200 V - highly accurate, temperature-stable and space-saving
  • Standardised signal distribution board used in all modules - reduces warehousing and increases ease of maintenance
  • TwinCAT 3 software for powerful debugging, high-level language programming and a convenient user interface
  • CP2924 multi-touch panel (24") for intuitive operation, display of complex test sequences and manual interventions

Ready for the future of test automation

With the MTS, we offer our customers a platform that can be developed dynamically - be it through new battery formats, test recipes or integration into MES and IIoT environments. The open system architecture and intelligent modularity make the MTS a future-proof investment, especially in the fast-moving world of electromobility.
